Horizon Report

Course

EDET 603 - Design and Development Tools I

Context and Conditions

This short course was designed to inform the learner about one of the 2021 Horizon Report Trends selected during this class in the Fall of 2021 (“2021 Educause Horizon Report,” 2021). I selected mental health issues in education, which during that time heavily revolved around COVID and remote learning. I used Articulate 360 for the first time to create this course.

Scope

This artifact was just intended for an academic setting; it was not a work related project. I chose the mental health topic out of the Horizon Report because I have a personal interest in mental health awareness. It was intended to be an entire instructional unit, albeit a very short one. It could be considered a quick, informative module about mental health in education during the pandemic.

Role

I was the instructional designer and developer for this project. The content and knowledge came from the 2021 Horizon Report as well as further research on related subjects.

Instructional Design

This artifact follows the Design and Development phases of the ADDIE model (“Addie Model,” 2018). This course was one of the first that I developed. It did not require as much content design as other courses as it was adapted from the 2021 Horizon Report, but interactive elements, pacing, layout, and visuals were all designed and then created during this process. This was my first attempt at world-related sequencing; the content begins with a context that the general public was very familiar with at the time, the COVID19 pandemic and its toll, and expands into mental health issues in education (Morrison et al., 2019).

Related Performance Indicator

This course fulfills the requirements for AECT Standard #5 - Research (AECT, 2012). The Standard 5 indicators that the paper fulfills include theoretical foundations, methods, and ethics. The creation of the course involved evaluating methods of relaying content in an engaging manner, as well as researching mental health issues in education and discussing these issues in an ethical and respectful manner.

Reflection

This course was my introduction to Articulate 360. I had to do a lot of research and trial and error as I designed and built it, and learned a lot about how the software worked. This one was short and fairly basic compared to the Articulate course I created closer to the end of the program. This course has fewer modules with far less content to navigate through than the one I created during my internship program, and has less variety of interactivity than the courses developed later.

In the same manner as my 3Cs Module, I was unfamilar with how to export this module to the web from Articulate. I used the same method to upload the course as I did for the 3Cs module: uploading the files to the cPanel directory, writing the HTML code to embed it in this website, and using ChatGPT to correct any file path errors. Initially, I made the mistake of including "public_html" in my file path without realizing that step is already taken into account. I asked ChatGPT for different scenarios as to why the file path would not work, and after eliminating its suggestions, I realized the example code it provided did not include the "public_html" step. This fixed the issue and allows you to open the course via the link at the top of this page.
