EDET 603 - Design and Development Tools I
IMP stands for Integrated Multimedia Project. This podcast was created during the Fall 2021 semester as one of the final multimedia projects for this class. I had worked with some of the software before during my undergraduate degree, but recording a podcast with another person remotely was new to me. A podcast was created as part of the overall IMP project for the course, which also included a screencast, marketing poster, cover art, and website centered around the topic of mental health in education.
This artifact was created solely for this course but could be presented and applied in other contexts. My work partner and I decided to continue with the topic of mental health in education, the same subject I selected for the Horizon Report Module in the same course, due to our shared interest in the subject.
This project was conducted by myself and a group partner. I wrote my own script, recorded my own speaking parts, and conducted the interview for this podcast, as well as created and recorded the introduction music and helped edit the final podcast together.
Morrison et al. (2019) describe the use of multimedia in developing elearning as part of the design considerations for technology-based instruction. They emphasize that the use of multimedia needs to begin with the learner and instruction in mind. In this instance, the goal of this podcast episode was to start a dialogue about mental health in education, so a podcast episode including an interview from a guest student was an appropriate vehicle for this topic. This podcast also falls into the Development phase of ADDIE, as it would be considered part of the multimedia features of an overall course (“Addie Model,” 2018).
This artifact fulfills the requirements for AECT Standard #4 - Professional Knowledge and Skills (AECT, 2012). This podcast meets the collaborative practice and reflection on practice indicators due to myself and my group partner working together to create a cohesive episode on one topic. Both of us brought our own research and experiences to the project as well as unique perspectives on the topic at hand, and worked to synthesize them into one product.
I enjoyed working on this project a lot. It was different than other projects completed for this program and exposed me to different tools and methods of conveying information to learners. I listen to podcasts regularly, but completing just one episode of my own made me consider the detail and effort that is required to convey concepts without any visuals. I used SoundTrap, an online audio recording and mixing platform created by Spotify to complete this project. I had used SoundTrap briefly before on my own after stumbling across it, but had not completed a full project using it before this artifact. The screenshot below shows the final waveforms of the podcast after everything was edited together. The intro music as well as all 3 speakers (Mallory, myself, and our interview guest) are split into three chanels and timed in succession with each other. I edited and mixed the final version of the podcast, and used the white line running through the top channel to control the volume throughout. The volume of the second red waveform is kept intentionally low to signal a transition in the podcast rather than overpower the speakers.
