My presentation was titled “Learning Design and Technology” because my audience was not familiar with the subject as a whole. I presented at the company I currently work at, to a group I usually don’t interact or work with. A few of my coworkers were teaching a regulations class to a group of apprentices, board members, and water system managers, and allotted time for me to present in the middle of their class. I have been working with our Workforce Development Manager (and my supervisor, Tara Friday) to start planning out online content for apprentices and pre-apprentices while completing the M.Ed. program, so I used this presentation opportunity to introduce myself and explain to them this program and what I have been working on for them and future apprentices.
My most recent project was building a pre-apprenticeship orientation course in ClassCraft, which is a gamified learning platform, so most of the presentation detailed research behind gamified learning before showcasing the project. I don’t like using a lot of text in my slides and would rather my speech be accentuated by graphics and pictures, so my slides by themselves do not reveal a lot. I was not sure what the makeup of the audience would be until the day of, but I did know that several apprentices would attend. In the future I would like to present to more apprentices and pre-apprentices, as the content was specifically directed towards them. I liked presenting in the middle of another class, as it gave both the speakers and the students a break from the main lesson. I enjoyed the experience of presenting in a work context to a group I usually don’t get to interact with. They were very responsive to the presentation despite it not being relevant to some of them and participated well.
